Signal Processing for Communications and Networking

SPCOM

PhD position in Multi-dimensional Signal Processing for Next Generation Wireless Radios

The progress in circuit technology has allowed researchers to think about leveraging spectrum beyond millimeter wave. It is not unreasonable to imagine commodity radios with massive antenna arrays and emerging radio frequency (RF) technologies in the near future. To enable efficient communication with these radios, it is critical to understand hardware constraints at the antennas, the RF and the digital front ends. In this position, you will design new waveforms and algorithms for communications while accounting for the hardware constraints in futuristic radios. To this end, you will use tools from multi-dimensional sequence design, optimization, and tensor signal processing. The waveforms and algorithms designed in your work will be evaluated on a millimeter wave testbed to highlight the potential of the proposed solutions in next generation wireless systems.

Postdoc in Algorithms and Architectures for Coherent Optical Communication

Postdoc in Computer Engineering formally based at the Department of Electrical Engineering

https://liu.se/en/work-at-liu/vacancies?rmpage=job&rmjob=14602&rmlang=UK

Duties
In the Division of Computer Engineering we perform research about efficient processing architectures for, among others, coherent optical communication. With the very high data rates in fiber optical communication systems, the available oversampling is a limiting factor. One primary objective of this post-doc position is to work on efficient solutions for fractional oversampling receivers for coherent optical communication. Traditionally, the adaptive equalizers operates at an integer multiple of the symbol rate. We envision that this can be done at a fractional multiple instead, avoiding both the higher sample rates and sample rate conversions involved with the integer multiple scheme. However, this require new algorithms, which also must be efficiently implementable.

The position is funded by the ELLIIT strategic research environment, https://old.liu.se/elliit?l=en and it is expected that the successful candidate attends the annual workshops and presents the outcomes. There are collaborations with the Division of Communication Systems at the Department and with Chalmers University of Technology within the project.

A Postdoc will essentially carry out research. The position may also involve teaching, but during no more than a fifth of work time. The duties may also include, if deemed relevant, engaging in PhD supervision and contributing to PhD courses.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a strong background in digital signal processing, ideally for optical communication. In addition, the applicant should
have experience with hardware implementation of digital signal processing algorithms using HDL (VHDL and/or Verilog) and logic synthesis (FPGA and/or ASIC). Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through original research resulting in publications in internationally recognized journals and conferences. The applicant should be able to work effectively both individually and together with other researchers.

Very good communication skills and very good knowledge of English, both verbal and written, are expected.

The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application and be in relevant fields of electrical or computer engineering.

Appointment time
A Postdoc is appointed until further notice, but for no longer than two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.

Starting date
By agreement.

Salary
The University applies individual salary scales adapted to the experience of the employee and to the labour market.

Postdoc in AI-based Radio Resource Management for 5G and Beyond

The goal of the project is to design an architecture and self-learning algorithms that can optimize and guarantee deterministic QoS of individual traffic flows whilst maximizing network resource efficiency. The general QoS architecture for end-to-end communication of heterogeneous types of traffic will include routing and scheduling for each traffic type and admission control possibly with QoS renegotiations and with shaping and spacing. Ideally, the performance of the proposed QoS architecture will be evaluated by using stochastic modelling and queuing theory, in addition to simulations that will complement the mathematical analysis. Employing AI/ML methodologies are strongly encouraged. The duties include theoretical analysis, algorithm design and implementation via software based simulations, writing scientific papers and support to project management and applications.
