News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

January 2020

The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 13 Technical Committees and 2 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that support a broad selection of signal processing-related activities defined by the scope of the Society.

Well, it’s January 1st. An old year is behind us, and a new year is ahead of us. Many of us have made various New Year’s resolutions, and most of them are probably dealing with our lifestyles (e.g., eat healthy, exercise more, and similar resolutions that will last until the second week of January). In the spirit of holidays, I would like to propose that we all make a collective New Year’s resolution. It’s a simple resolution. We promise that we will review more papers (and/or grants).

With the great endeavor of computer vision community, 2D human pose estimation has achieved considerable success in recent years, from the introduction of single-person pose estimation models such as the convolutional pose machine and stacked hourglass models  to multi-person pose estimation networks such as OpenPose.

The positions we take in our sleep could reveal important factors related to our physical/mental well-being as well as affect the symptoms of conditions such as sleep apnea, bedsores, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Moreover, patients are usually required to maintain specific poses after certain surgeries to get a better recovery result and during pregnancy, pregnant women are recommended to avoid certain sleeping postures that could cause harm to the fetus.

Chandra R. Murthy is a Professor in the department of Electrical Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. His research interests are in the areas of multiuser MIMO systems, 5G, and sparse signal recovery techniques applied to wireless communications. He has 60+ journal papers and 90+ conference papers to his credit.

Gaurav Sharma is a professor in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Biostatistics and Computational Biology, and a Distinguished Researcher in Center of Excellence in Data Science (CoE) at the Goergen Institute for Data Science at the University of Rochester.

The IEEE SPS congratulates the following SPS members who will receive the Society’s prestigious awards during ICASSP 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.

IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the IEEE. It honors members with an outstanding record of technical achievements, contributing importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, and bringing significant value to society.

IEEE has announced the recipients of the 2020 IEEE medals.  IEEE medals are the highest honor of awards presented by IEEE.  The medals will be presented at the 2020 IEEE Honors Ceremony.  Three Signal Processing Society members have been awarded with IEEE medals for 2020

Nominations Due 4 February 2020. In accordance with the provision of IEEE Bylaw 307, the Division IX Nominating Committee hereby solicits your nominations for the position of Division IX Director-Elect.  Please send your nominations to Theresa Argiropoulos, SPS Senior Manager, Operations, via t.argiropoulos@ieee.org.
