Over-the-air computation (AirComp) leverages the signal superposition characteristic of wireless multiple-access channels (MACs) to perform mathematical computations. Initially introduced to enhance communication reliability in interference channels and wireless sensor networks (WSNs), AirComp has more recently found applications in task-oriented communications like wireless distributed learning and in wireless control systems.

The tutorial “Introducing Information Metrics for Statistical Signal Processing,” [A1] provided the inspiration for our cover in this issue.

In his January 2012 column for IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, K. J. Ray Liu, then president of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS), highlighted the importance of establishing a formal community when individuals come together to create a professional society [1]. He emphasized that the Society’s primary mission, its raison d’être, is to serve its community, and the key to achieving this mission is to serve its members effectively.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the start of the 2025 SPS Annual General Election has been postponed. The election will now open on 17 October 2025 and close on 4 December 2025, instead of the originally scheduled date of 15 August.

Additional information about the candidates will be shared as we approach the new opening date.

Thank you for your understanding and continued engagement.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is pleased to announce that Professor Honggang Wang has been elected as the new Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (T-MM)

The IEEE SPS SigMA (Signal Processing Mentorship Academy) Steering Committee will soon launch the fourth installment of its mentoring program for young IEEE SPS researchers and would like to invite you to join as research mentors.

This prestigious award honors a paper that demonstrates exceptional innovation, quality, and impact in the field of medical imaging.

2025 IEEE SPS Award nominations are now open. Nominate a colleague and recognize their work.

SPS Members win the 2026 IEEE Technical Field Award and the 2025 IEEE Haraden Pratt Award for outstanding volunteer service.

These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is accepting proposals for the 2030 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) and invites SPS members to submit a proposal.

Listed to the experts discuss the design of machine learning systems that are inherently efficient.
