JPEG XR Image Coding Standard

JPEG XR is the newest image coding standard from the JPEG committee. It primarily targets the representation of continuous-tone still images such as photographic images, and achieves high image quality, on par with JPEG 2000, while requiring low computational resources and storage capacity.

Activity Report from SPS Denver Chapter

IEEE Signal Processing Denver Chapter has organized a number of recent events, providing members with technical talks and lectures and in the mean time offering networking opportunities. The chapter will be conducting the second annual competition for funding college senior projects that utilize signal processing concepts and techniques. In November 2009, the Chapter is calling for new officer nominations for 2010 and hosting a social gathering event.

Activity Report from Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP) TC

The Machine Learning for Signal Processing Technical Committee (MLSP TC) is at the interface between theory and application, developing novel theoretically-inspired methodologies targeting both longstanding and emergent signal processing applications. A main TC-sponsored annual event is the IEEE Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing. The Nineteenth MLSP Workshop was successfully held in September 2009 in the city of Grenoble, France, with picturesque views of mountains leading up to the Alps.

Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) TC Activities

The Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Technical Committee addresses the areas of sensor array and multi-channel statistical signal processing, with main application areas focusing on radar, sonar, wireless communications, microphone array processing, navigation, seismology, radio astronomy, and biomedicine. At ICASSP 2009, the SAM TC collaborated with the SPTM and SPCOM TCs to organize a Thematic Symposium on Network Distributed Signal Processing; Harry Van Trees nominated by the SAM TC received SPS Technical Achievement Award. The SAM TC participated in its first TC review by the Signal Processing Society and adopted formal Bylaws.

News from the Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee (SLTC)

The Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee (SLTC) promotes and influences all the technical areas of speech and language processing. As year-end approaches, the TC is getting ready for the eleventh biannual IEEE ASRU Workshop that will be held on December 13-17 in Merano, Italy. 18 new TC members were recently selected from a larger pool of recognized international experts. SLTC 2009 summer eNewsLetter edition has been published online, with a new pilot feature that allows readers to add their comments about the published articles.

Activity Updates from Signal Processing Theory and Methods (SPTM) TC

The Signal Processing Theory and Methods Technical Committee (SPTM TC) promotes activities in the technical areas of theory and methods of digital and statistical signal processing. The 2009 edition of the TC-sponsored IEEE Workshop on Statistical Signal Processing was held in Cardiff, UK in September 2009. The event was very well attended with almost 250 attendees, who enjoyed six keynote talks from leading international researchers. The 14th IEEE SPS Workshop on DSP and SP Education will take place in Sedona, Arizona, USA in 2010.

From Lagrange to Shannon and Back: Another Look at Sampling

Classical digital signal processing tells us the tale of a continuous-time primeval signal, of its brutal sampling, and of the magic sinc interpolation that, under the aegis of bandlimitedness, brings the original signal back to (continuous) life. However, it is very interesting to switch the conventional viewpoint and cast discrete-time sequences in the lead role, with continuous-time signals entering the scene as a derived version of their gap-toothed archetypes.

Update from the Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) TC

The purpose of the IVMSP TC is to promote and guide the advancement of the field of image, video, and multidimensional signal processing. One of the TC’s most important responsibilities is overseeing the organization and the technical program, and serving as core reviewers, for the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP). The technical program for ICIP 2009, which will be held in Cairo, Egypt, in November 2009, recently been finalized with the TCs active involvement. Interested SPS members may approach a current TC member to seek nomination to join the TC during this Fall's new member election.

IEEE SPS 2009 Member-at-Large Election Results

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2010 and will serve until 31 December 2012. Seven candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions. The successful candidates represent a broad spectrum of the Signal Processing Society, and the Board of Governors will confirm the election results at the next meeting in November 2009. The successful candidates are: Alex Acero (Microsoft Corporation, USA), Antonia Papandreou-Suppappola (Arizona State University, USA), and Mats Viberg (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden).
