The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

Dr. Li is a Singaporean scientist, and a Chinese Teochew native. He is now a Presidential Chair Professor at the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China. He did his Ph.D in digital signal processing of speech in 1990, and spent the past three decades to refine the technology.

Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) imaging is an exciting technology which uses time-resolved sensors to see objects that are hidden from view. In essence, NLoS imaging lets someone turn a wall into a mirror. This talk will highlight recent advances in NLoS imaging, with an emphasis on the algorithms which underlie their operation.

Title: Secure Biometric Authentication Using Privacy-Preserving Cryptographic Protocols
Registration | Full webinar details

As an authentication method, biometrics offer unparalleled convenience and security. With very little for users to remember and do, there is also very little that they can do incorrectly, thus limiting the attack surface of an authentication system. Unfortunately, biometrics also present a challenging privacy/security tradeoff: biometric data...

Radio maps characterize quantities of interest in radio communication environments, such as the received signal strength and channel attenuation, at every point of a geographical region. Radio map estimation (RME) typically entails interpolative inference based on spatially distributed measurements. In this tutorial article, after presenting some representative applications of radio maps, the most prominent RME methods are discussed.

Sparse modeling for signal processing and machine learning, in general, has been at the focus of scientific research for over two decades. Among others, supervised sparsity-aware learning (SAL) consists of two major paths paved by 1) discriminative methods that establish direct input–output mapping based on a regularized cost function optimization and 2) generative methods that learn the underlying distributions.

Word art, which is text rendered with properly designed appealing artistic effects, has been a popular form of art throughout human history. Artistic text effects are of great aesthetic value and symbolic significance. Decorating with appropriate effects not only makes text more attractive but also significantly enhances the atmosphere of a scene. Thus, artistic text effects are widely used in publicity and advertising.

Earthquakes have afflicted people throughout history. Today, thanks to advanced technology, more is known about earthquakes, and more can be done to protect people against them. Signal processing is playing a key role as investigators examine ways to combat one of humanity’s most deadly foes.

IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form related to a particular TC field. To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and selecting a particular TC.

IEEE members are bound by the IEEE Code of Ethics [1] . By becoming IEEE members, we commit ourselves to the highest ethical and professional conduct. We agree to uphold the practices of ethical design and sustainable development; protect the privacy of others; and promptly disclose factors that might endanger the public or the environment. We strive to improve the public understanding of the implications of technology.

Ethics in science is essential for various reasons and is a duty for scientists. The full sense of the word ethics may differ according to languages and countries. For instance, in France, we typically make a distinction between ethics and scientific integrity, while scientific integrity is a part of ethics in the United States.

The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 12 Technical Committees that support a broad selection of signal processing-related activities defined by the scope of the Society.

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2023 and will serve until 31 December 2025. Seven candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions.

Augmented reality devices of the future will likely fuse sensor data from several modalities, allowing multichannel speech enhancement algorithms to exploit, for example, head orientation and accurately estimated source directions.

Separating the household aggregated energy consumption signal into its additive sub-components (the power signal from individual appliances), is called energy (power) disaggregation or non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM).

Speech enhancement and speech separation are two related tasks, whose purpose is to extract either one or more target speech signals, respectively, from a mixture of sounds generated by several sources.
