Open-Rank Faculty Position in Geocomputation - Spatial Analysis Cluster Hire

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) invites applications for an open-rank (tenure-track/tenured) position in the area of geocomputation. This position is part of a major initiative to create a world-class consortium of spatial researchers who are advancing both geospatial analysis and applications to the grand challenges across science, engineering and the humanities.

As a member of the University’s new Center for Spatial Science, the successful candidate will play a central role in advancing the geocomputational and analytical capacity of the Center, and in realizing the Center's mission to develop state of the science geospatial methods and their application in interdisciplinary research at UCR and beyond. We seek a Ph.D with an outstanding research agenda in one or more of the following areas: high performance geocomputation, geovisualization, spatio-temporal databases, spatial optimization, spatial-temporal signal and image processing, and spatial statistics.

This position will commence as early as July 1, 2017 or as negotiated. Salary level will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to candidates whose research both enhances the Center’s contributions to fundamental geographic information science, and stimulates interdisciplinary research. A successful candidate at the assistant professor level must have a promising research agenda and is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant externally funded research program. A successful candidate at the associate or full professor level will be an individual of international reputation, with a record of high quality research funding and strong interdisciplinary collaborations with policy relevance.

The University of California at Riverside (UCR) is implementing a major expansion of our faculty and investing in state-of-the-art research facilities to support their work. This expansion will build critical mass in 34 vital and emerging fields of scholarship, foster truly cross-disciplinary work, and further diversify the faculty at one of America’s most diverse research universities. We encourage applications from scholars committed to excellence and seeking to help define the research university for the next generation. For more information about our hiring initiative, please visit clusterhiring.ucr.edu or academicpersonnel.ucr.edu.

The University of California, Riverside is situated in an historic citrus growing area surrounded by mountain ranges. Riverside is about an hour away from ski slopes, surfing, or hiking in mountain or desert environments, and housing in the area is affordable. The campus boasts a fully-accredited child care facility. UCR maintains a commitment to “family friendly” policies and programs including opportunity for spousal/partner hiring.

UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and first-generation college students. A commitment to this mission is a preferred qualification.

Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by February 12, 2017. We will continue to consider applications until the position is filled.  To apply:  Please provide a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae, a description of proposed research, and teaching philosophy.  Candidates applying for the Assistant Professor position will need to provide 3-5 letters of reference; individuals applying for positions above the Assistant level will be required to provide names and contact details for confidential references.  A statement addressing potential contribution to academic diversity must be included.
