News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

Technical Committee News

The IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee reports on the Interspeech conference and an interview with Geoffery Zweig.

Researchers from Disney Research have built a cordless one-legged hopping robot that can bounce up to 7 seconds/19 times without falling over. They employed a linear elastic actuator in parallel (LEAP), which placed a voice coil actuator (VCA) in parallel with compression springs, to act as the primary weight-bearing actuator for the one-legged hopping robot.

Elect New Members and Vice-Chair for MMSP TC

The Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP) Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society is soliciting nominations or self-nominations of Vice Chair and new members. The deadline is October 22, 2016. Please contact Jie Liang (jiel@sfu.ca) to obtain the nomination forms.

Nomination of new TC members:

- Elected TC members will serve a 3-year term from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019.

The Machine Learning for Signal Processing Technical Committee (MLSP TC) is involved with activities that facilitate the use of machine learning techniques for signal processing problems through advances in both the theory and practice of machine learning.

For our October 2016 issue, we cover recent patents dealing with radar imaging. The section below covers patents granted recently for radar signal visualization, synthetic radar imaging, compressive imaging techniques, object detection and fusion, and radar based navigation.

The Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee (IFS TC) reports on the IEEE Signal Processing Cup 2016, Multimedia Forensics in the news.the WIFS 2016 to be held in Abu Dhabi and more.

Researchers from MIT have developed "Interactive Dynamic Video", a technology that allows the background to interact with Pokemon and virtual forces. It analyzes video clips to find vibration patterns at different frequencies, which represent distinct ways that an object can move.

For our August 2016 issue, we cover recent patents dealing with hardware and algorithmic issues of image registration. The section below covers patents granted recently for rigid and elastic image registration, patch matching, image alignment under low contrast or illumination, and specific devices constructed for the task.

Memory is one of the three key factors for cognitive dynamic systems. A paper titled A Comprehensive Study of the Past, Present, and Future of Data Deduplication, published in the Proceedings of the IEEE Sep. 2016, provides a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in data deduplication technologies for storage systems, covering key technologies, main applications, open problems, and future research directions.

Research in artificial intelligence (AI) has made great progress in recent years including Google's Go-playing AI AlphaGo beating world-class player Lee Se-dol in a 4-1 victory. While AI surpasses human intelligence in many tasks, the way it works is very different from the human brain. Dr. Dhruv Batra from Virginia Tech gave a presentation on whether humans and AI look at the same regions when answering visual questions, at Data Science Summit 2016, in San Francisco, CA. https://www.arxiv-vanity.com/papers/1606.03556/
