News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
Contributed by Tim Davidson (Chair of the SPCOM TC)
The Signal Processing for Communications and Networking Technical Committee (SPCOM TC) promotes activities addressing signal processing challenges in communications and networking. It can be placed at the point at which the IEEE Signal Processing (SPS), Communications (COMSOC), and Information Theory (IT) Societies overlap.
During Fall 2013, the SPCOM TC elected 10 new members, who started their terms in January 2014. We would like to give a warm welcome to Biao Chen, Philippe Ciblat, Feifei Gao, Shi Jin, Chandra Murthy, Ahmed Sadek, Mathini Sellathurai, Cihan Tepedelenlioglu, Weifeng Su, and Pengfei Xia. In addition, Chong-Yung Chi, Matthew McKay, Milica Stojanovic, Wolfgang Utschick and Sergiy Vorobyov were re-elected to serve a second term, and Erik Larsson was elected as Vice-Chair. We would like to thank retiring members Paolo Banelli, Eduard Jorswieck, Syed Jafar, Ye (Geoffrey) Li, Roberto López-Valcarce, Xiaoli Ma, Gerald Matz, Alejandro Ribeiro and Wei Yu for their valuable contributions during their terms, and we would like to offer a special vote of thanks to retiring Past-Chair, Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo. We would also like to congratulate the current and former SPCOM TC members that were elevated to IEEE Fellow this year, namely Shuguang (Robert) Cui, Syed Jafar, Philip Schniter, Wei Yu, and Shengli Zhou.
The main workshop of the SPCOM TC is the IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC), which is devoted to recent advances in signal processing for wireless and mobile communications, information and network theory. The General Co-Chairs Tim Davidson and Wei Yu are pleased to announce the 15th edition of SPAWC, which will be held on June 22-25, 2014 in Toronto, Canada. The workshop will consist of plenary talks given by Nihar Jindal, Frank Kschischang, Upamanyu Madhow, and Tom Marzetta, discussion panels, engaging poster sessions, and social events that will provide opportunities to exchange ideas and create networks in a less formal setting. Furthermore, the event is co-located with the North American Information Theory Summer School. We encourage you to join us for a great technical and social event at SPAWC 2014 in Toronto.
During December 2013 and January 2014, the SPCOM TC members and affiliate/associate members were busy reviewing submissions to ICASSP 2014. This year we received a total of 405 submissions to the Signal Processing for Communications and Networking track, which is the largest number since 2006. The papers were reviewed by at least 3 reviewers, and 201 were accepted for presentation at ICASSP 2014 in Florence in May.
The SPCOM TC maintains a job opportunities website. We would like you to consider submitting a post to our website with any job openings or postdoc positions that your organization may have. For this and other information, please visit the SPCOM TC webpage.
