With the advent of ubiquitous sensing and real-time data processing, the demand for engineers with solid signal processing skills has exceeded the supply by a large margin. However, even students in technical subjects often perceive signal processing as demanding and somewhat dry [4].

Each "Reader’s Choice" column focuses on a different publication of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. This month we are highlighting articles in IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks (T-SIPN).

Functions of complex variables arise frequently in the formulation of sig - nal processing problems. The basic calculus rules on differentiation and integration for functions of complex variables resemble, but are not identical to, the rules of their real variable counterparts.

Industrial control systems (ICSs) manage and monitor critical civil or military infrastructure, such as water treatment facilities, power plants, electricity grids, transportation systems, oil and gas refineries, and health care.

In this column of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, 46 IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) members are recognized as IEEE Fellows and award recipients are announced.

During the Christmas break, I had a mundane problem to solve. Most PCs today no longer come with disk drives. This was problematic for me since, like for many of you, my family videos are stored on CDs and DVDs.

The sliding discrete Fourier transform (SDFT) is an efficient method for computing the N-point DFT of a given signal starting at a given sample from the N-point DFT of the same signal starting at the previous sample [1]. However, the SDFT does not allow the use of a window function, generally incorporated in the computation of the DFT to reduce spectral leakage, as it would break its sliding property.

Speech, the expression of thoughts and feelings by articulating sounds, is an ability so taken for granted that few people bother to think about how complex and nuanced the process actually is. Yet, as more devices gain the ability to listen to and interpret what speakers are saying, speech and audiology technologies are attracting the interest of a growing number of academic researchers. Signal processing is now playing a critical role in making speech detection and recognition more accurate, flexible, and reliable for use in a wide range of research and everyday applications.
