JAMES L. FLANAGAN (1925 - 2015), a pioneer in the field of acoustics and signal processing died on Tuesday, August 25, at this home in Warren Township, one day shy of his 90 the next day. Flanagan’s legendary career was marked by a remarkable productivity of the highest technical and intellectual caliber. A visionary, well ahead of his time, he led the world into the present era of digital speech communications, machine learning and human-to-computer interaction.

SPS Nominations and Appointments Committee Chair

In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I am writing to solicit nominations for the Awards Board for the term 2016-18 and the Nominations and Appointments (N&A) Committee for the term 2016-17. This year, the Society will be filling THREE positions on the N&A Committee and TWO positions on the Awards Board. Nominations must be received no later than Thursday, 1 October 2015.

As a special benefit to IEEE members for the month of August, IEEE-USA will offer “Work-Life Balance -- Book 2,” by Peggy Hutcheson. In “Book 1,” Hutcheson introduced some of the major issues that lead to varying degrees of balance in a person's sense of satisfaction in life. In “Book 2,” she explores work-life balance, with regard to career stages -- young professional, mid-career, and late career. Available 1 August to 15 September.

Overview The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $40,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2015 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter. Allocation of funds will be competitive. Access the application here.

IEEE Day 2015 will be held on Tuesday, 6 October. This will be the sixth anniversary of IEEE members celebrating the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.

Since the first IEEE Day event in 2010, the number of events worldwide has grown over 600%, from 80 to over 520! The IEEE Day team needs you to help grow this annual event even larger.
