Society News

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) held a long-range strategic retreat during IEEE ICIP 2010 to seek attendance and input from a variety of Society, industrial, and local leaders to bring to the event fresh points of view. How to better serve our members was the central theme of the discussion in the retreat, and several items were identified as key new initiatives that SPS can consider to take on to offer more benefit and value to our members. SPS leadership and EXCOM will sort through the list with careful thinking to plan for the execution and implementation in the coming years. The SPS members are also invited to provide input to this SPS long-range planning and implementation initiative.

DaubechiesPrinceton University physicist and mathematician Ingrid Daubechies won the Franklin Medal for Electrical Engineering for discovering a revolutionary data compression technique.

In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the SPS members elected, by direct ballot, THREE Members-at-Large to the Board of Governors (BoG) for three-year terms commencing 1 January 2011 and ending 31 December 2013, as well as FOUR Regional Directors-at-Large each for the corresponding regions: Regions 1-6 (US), Regions 7 and 9 (Canada and Latin America), Region 8 (Europe/Middle East/Africa), and Region 10 (Asia/Pacific Rim) for two-year terms commencing 1 January 2011 and ending 31 December 2012.

This year three Signal Processing Society members have been elected to IEEE level positions.

At its 30 September 2010 meeting, the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society passed an amendment to the Society’s Field of Interest,

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2011 and will serve until 31 December 2013.
