The Bio Imaging and Signal Processing (BIPS) Technical Committee updates this month on awards, past and future competitions and more

Dear Members,

- Are you an IEEE member, IEEE student member, IEEE graduate student member or IEEE young professional member?

- Do you know one or more 12-18 year old students from within your family, friendship circle, or local school who is
interested in engineering, computing, or technology?

- Do you want to help students inspire others to learn more about these disciplines by creating an animation?

IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the IEEE. It honors members with an outstanding record of technical achievements, contributing importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, and bringing significant value to society. Around this time (end of November), the new class of IEEE Fellows is announced. Hopefully, the list contains many names familiar to you. If not, then perhaps it is a good idea to nominate someone yourself!

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) appointed several new Chairs for committees that report to the Membership Board. The appointments are as follows:

For our November 2014 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of Signal Processing for Big Data. The section below covers patents granted recently for system security, storage management, portable audio synthesis, parallel signal processing and securing secret of users.

Le An, (University of California, Riverside) “Real-World Person Identification”(2014) Advisor: Bir Bhanu

Das, Jnaneshwar (University of Southern California) “Data-driven Robotic Sampling for Marine Ecosystem Monitoring” Advisor: Sukhatme, Gaurav S. (2014)

The following SPS Distinguished lectures will be held in the upcoming months

In this series we introduce a member of our Society by means of an interview. This month, we are happy to introduce Neil Wachowski from Colorade State University, who recently finished his PhD thesis, "Characterization of Multiple Time-Varying Transient Sources from Multivariate Data Sequences.”

The American Epilepsy Society Seizure Prediction Challenge, hosted on Kaggle.com, started on August 25, 2014, and will end on November 17, 2014. It is the second phase of the Seizure Detection and Prediction Challenge designed by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Mayo Clinic. The first phase (ended on August 19, 2014), focusing on seizure detection, has attracted 200 teams, 241 players, and 4503 entries.

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2015 and will serve until 31 December 2017. Nine candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions. The successful candidates represent a broad spectrum of the Signal Processing Society. The Board of Governors will confirm the election results at their December Board meeting.

High beams are designed to illuminate dark roads, but may temporarily blind surrounding drivers. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have developed smart automotive headlights that light up the road without glaring other drivers.

The e-Membership program started as a pilot in 2011. The intent of the pilot was to test the impact of substantially reduced dues on membership recruitment and retention in countries where the per capita gross domestic product is US$15,000 or less. Data has shown that there was no significant increase on recruitment or retention during this period.

The following SPS Distinguished lectures will be held in the upcoming months

Wachowski, Neil. (Colorado State University) “Characterization of Multiple Time-Varying Transient Sources from Multivariate Data Sequences”,  Advisor: Azimi-Sadjadi, Mahmood R. (2014)

For the first time two teams jointly won the SAUC-E competition, the Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge - Europe. The ENSTA Bretagne team, with the robot SAUC-ISSE, and the DFKI GmbH-University of Bremen team, with the robot Avalon, triumphed over four other teams at the 9th edition. The 2nd prize went jointly to the ENSTA Bretagne team, with the robot CISSAU, and to University of Applied Sciences Kiel, with the robot TomKyle, which was awarded as well for the “Best Journal Paper”.

For our October 2014 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of speaker recognition. The section below covers patents granted recently for systems or methods which propose either new speaker recognition apporaches or utilize existing speaker recognition modules in key roles for obtaining added values for their services.
