The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

There are a number of things we want readers to know about the Signal Processing Education (SPED) Technical Committee activities this year.

The website that houses IEEE's collection of online courses has been completely overhauled.

Alexander Olshevsky (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), " Efficient information aggregation strategies for distributed control and signal processing", Advisor: Prof. John N. Tsitsiklis (2010)

The IEEE Signal Processing Society has enjoyed healthy financial operations for a number of years, thanks to the tremendous amount of effort from volunteers and the support from the staff. In order to leverage its financial strength to serve members and invest for the future prosperity of the signal processing community, the SPS Board of Governors has set aside a sizable amount of funds for 2011 and is working on the 2012 budget to explore various initiatives to expand member benefits and values, to outreach to signal processing communities worldwide, and to enhance the visibility of the SPS. For example, the Society has approved to allocate a substantial annual fund to support students and researchers in needs from developing countries to attend ICASSP and ICIP. Fifty-one SPS members who are ICASSP 2011 authors have been selected as the first group of travel grantees.

The Steering Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) recently distributed a call for proposals to host ICME 2013 and ICME 2014, to be held in summer of both years. IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) has been the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies since 2000.

The IEEE eLearning Library, recently launched for organizational subscriptions, now also provides technical professionals and students with access to individual, fee-based short courses and conference workshops. Members of IEEE receive a further benefit of a members-only discount.

The DISPS TC promotes and supports activities of SPS in the several areas including: (i) design, development and implementation of signal processing systems, (ii) design of algorithms with implementation in mind, and design of software tools and methodologies to support the design of signal processing systems.

With the March issue, the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter has been published for one full quarter. The newsletter continues to

In order to provide a more accessible resource for Section/Chapter Distinguished Lecturer program information, a new IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program web page has been created to assist Sections/Chapters looking for a Distinguished Lecturer.

In response to a call for a lower cost membership option for individuals residing in developing economies, IEEE began offering the new electronic membership (e-Membership) option for the 2011 renewal year.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society invites nominations for the 2012 Class of SPS Distinguished Lecturers (DLs). The deadline for nominations is 1 June 2011.

The nomination form can be found online at this link, along with the current list of DLs and other general information about the program.

vTools.Meetings http://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/main version 3.1.0 was released on 23 February 2011.

The Forensic Science program at Penn State has an opening for a researcher to work on an NIJ-sponsored fingerprint statistics project.
