The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 13 Technical Committees that support a broad selection of signal processing-related activities defined by the scope of the Society.

In an effort to continue our programs and services during this difficult time, the SPS Awards Board is now accepting nominations for all Society level awards, from paper awards to the major society awards. Nominations are due by 1 September 2020.

It is my pleasure to announce that the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) annual election will commence on 17 August! This year, all eligible SPS Members will now vote for the Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 1-6 and 8 (term 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2022), and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2021 through 31 December 2023) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors (BoG).

Your event was a success, you had great feedback from attendees, and you made lasting impacts on your community. Now that your event is over, you may be wondering how to keep attendees engaged and looking forward to your next event.

A process is in place to ensure that Section, Chapter and Society officers will be notified when a wire transfer is processed through a local Section bank account for a chapter that does not have its own bank account.

This issue brings to you our interview with Dr. Thướng Nguyễn Cảnh an active IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Young Professional. We approached Dr. Cảnh with a few questions

August 2020 is here. None of us really could imagine that we will be still working around COVID19 issues, but we are, and it’s a new normal. Many American universities are preparing for the fall semester, and it will be a hybrid semester at American schools, meaning, some in-person classes with most classes being online due to health and safety concerns. A similar situation is expected around the globe.

The SPS Fellow Evaluation Committee is seeking nominations for four new members of the 2021 Fellow Evaluation Committee. The term of appointment is one year, renewable for up to three consecutive years (1 January 2021-31 December 2021). The position is responsible for evaluating nominations for IEEE Fellow that are referred for review by the IEEE Fellow Committee and providing IEEE Judges with a critical evaluation and assessment of nominees referred to the Society by the nominator. 

The IEEE annual election begins on 17 August and end on 1 October. All ballots must be received by 12:00 p.m. EDT USA/16:00 UTC. The IEEE Signal Processing Society is committed to ensuring that its members are prepared with sufficient information about the candidates in order to make their best informed decision.

Application to natural disasters

Chetan Arora is an Associate Professor with Computer Science Department at IIT Delhi. He received Ph.D. in Computer Science and B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, both from IIT Delhi in 2012 and 1999 respectively. He did his Post Doctoral Research with Prof. Shmuel Peleg from 2012-2014 in Hebrew University, Israel.  Prior to joining IIT Delhi, he was an Assistant Professor with IIIT Delhi.

As a reminder, most of the SPS publications have eliminated month-based issues and moved to a volume-only, continuous pagination model. This allows for rapid dissemination of content for our journals and now, articles are posted to their respective journals on IEEEXplore® nearly every day! 

Deep neural networks achieve state-of-the-art performance in many domains in signal processing. The main practice is getting pairs of examples, input, and its desired output, and then training a network to produce the same outputs with the goal that it will learn how to generalize also to new unseen data, which is indeed  the case in many scenarios.

We continue to live through a unique experience in history. Out of concern for each other, we have voluntarily participated in essentially shutting down economic activities across the globe. We have discovered the interdependencies and precariousness of our lives and livelihoods. We have learned who and what is essential or important and have simplified our lives. The safety and success of autonomous vehicles (AVs) depend on their ability to accurately map and respond to their surroundings in real time. One of the most promising recent technologies for depth mapping is single-photon lidar (SPL), which measures the time of flight of individual photons. The long-range capabilities (kilometers), excellent depth resolution (centimeters), and use of low-power (eye-safe) laser sources renders this modality a strong candidate for use in AVs.

The articles in this special section were focused on the current state of the art as well as emerging trends in the design, development, and deployment of sensing and perception technologies for autonomous and automated driving. Such technologies include camera, ultrasound, Global Navigation Satellite System-, lidar-, and radar-based platforms integrat ing signa l processing components to process the acquired data and extract information to be used for recognition, navigation, and situational awareness.

Reports on the technology of body worn cameras (BWMs) and discusses the threat to privacy that this passive data collection creates, along with opportunities to mitigate this risk. Furthermore, we argue that the use case of BWCs at work will stimulate the development of solutions that prevent the collection of data that could infringe upon the privacy of the wearer. Finally, we discuss the desirable properties of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) for BWCs.

Like many of you, I am still working remotely, due to COVID-19, while writing this editorial. As in the past two years, I was planning to give an update on the magazine from our editorial board meeting. However, since ICASSP was remote, we have not yet scheduled the board meeting. Instead, I have decided to talk about a topic of personal interest: connections between communications and sensing in the context of vehicular systems.
