January 2011

Beginning January 2011, several of the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Technical Committees (TCs) have new Chairs taking leadership roles.

Links and more information about the 13 TCs in the Society can be found at this link.

The 2010 Annual Reporting and Rebate cycle has begun. Forms should be completed and submitted as soon as possible, but no later than 31 March 2011.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) invites nominations for the position of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. Nominations should be submitted to Ali H. Sayed, SPS Vice President-Publication.

Please provide nominations for BoG Members-at-Large to Past President José M. F. Moura via e-mail to t.argiropoulos@ieee.org or via fax to 732-235-1627. Nominations must be received no later than 18 March 2011.

by Dr. Mohammad Faizal Ahmad Fauzi, Multimedia University, Malaysia, Chapter Chair.

In year 2010, IEEE Signal Processing Malaysia Chapter has organized various activities ranging from membership drive, workshops, technical talks, technical visit, competition, conference technical co-sponsorships, social activities as well as administrative meetings.

Five workshops, including one fully sponsored by the chapter, were organized:

As the Associate Editor for the SPS eNewsletter in charge of liaising with the different Technical Committees of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I gathered below frequently recurring questions together with the best answers I could come up with so far.

Each year, the IEEE Board of Directors confers the grade of Fellow on up to one-tenth percent of the members. To qualify for consideration, an individual must have been a Member, normally for five years or more, and a Senior Member at the time for nomination to Fellow. The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in IEEE’s designated fields. This year 49 SPS members were recognized with the grade of Fellow by the IEEE Signal Processing Society as of 1 January 2011.

By most standards, cloud computing is still in the early stages of adoption by midsize and larger organizations, but the pace is increasing as users look for additional cost savings and technology perks, such as scalability.

At a minimum, it appears that most midsize and large organizations are making some kind of investment in cloud computing, or in shared services at some level, that would eventually lead to their accessing programs, storage, and processing from service providers on virtualized or distributed systems.

The Steering Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) recently distributed a call for proposals to host ICME 2013 and ICME 2014, to be held in summer of both years. IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) has been the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies since 2000.
