News and Resources for Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society

September 2014

Welcome to the Fall 2014 edition of the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee's Newsletter! This issue of the newsletter includes 7 articles and announcements from 13 contributors, including our own staff reporters and editors. Thank you all for your contributions! This issue includes news about IEEE journals and recent workshops, SLTC call for nominations, and individual contributions.

Zaher (Zak) Kassas (The University of Texas at Austin), Analysis and Synthesis of Collaborative Opportunistic Navigation Systems, Advisor: Prof. Todd E. Humphreys and Prof. Ari Arapostathis

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) invites nominations for
the position of Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks (TSIPN) for a 3-year term starting 1 January 2015. TSIPN is a new journal co-sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Communications Society and Computer Society, launching in 2015, and the EIC is expected to play a major role in the start up.

The Signal Processing Society has added a new journal to its portfolio: The IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging. This new, online-only, Transactions will publish original research results where computation plays an integral role in the image formation process. Original research will be published on all areas of computational imaging ranging from the principles and theory of computational imaging, to modeling paradigms for computational imaging, to image formation methods, to the latest innovative computational imaging system designs.

The Signal Processing for Communications and Navigation Group (SPCOMNAV), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, seeks a post doctoral researcher to contribute to the activities of the group related to GNSS (GPS, Galileo) signal processing. These activities cover a broad range of topics: techniques for high-sensitivity applications, computationally efficient algorithms for snapshot architectures, signal-level integrity, software receiver for high-order BOC signals, etc.

The following SPS Distinguished lectures will be held in the upcoming months

Henze Bancroft, Leah C. (The University of Wisconsin - Madison) “High Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Bilateral Breasts Using an Accelerated 3D Radial Trajectory”, Advisor: Block, Walter F. (2014)

The University of Texas at San Antonio is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to be part of an interdisciplinary research alliance (Cognition and Neuroergonomics Collaborative Research Alliances (CNACTA)) working to develop data analysis and management methods and tools for mobile brain/body imaging data in support of a research program in neuroergonomics (the study of the brain and body at work).

Overview The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $40,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2014 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. All proposals must include the involvement of one or more local Chapters to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive. Access the application here.

The Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) group at the University of Sydney currently has a vacancy for an experienced researcher in the field of optical signal processing for coherent communication systems working in the Terabit per Second (Tb/S) flagship project.
