Welcome to the Fall 2015 edition of the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee's Newsletter! This issue of the newsletter includes 5 articles and announcements from 11 contributors, including our own staff reporters and editors.

The Signal Processing for Communications and Networking Technical Committee (SPCOM TC) reports on received awards, new members and this year's IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC) that took place in Stockholm, Sweden.

The IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee reports on past and future workshops, speech databases and various call for proposals.

The Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee for each Technical Committee is currently seeking nominations for new Members, as well as the Vice Chair position for some Technical Committees. Nominations for both positions should be submitted directly to each Technical Committee’s Nominations and Appointments Subcommittee. Please provide the name, contact information and biography with the nomination.

The Signal Processing Society (SPS) has 12 technical committees and three Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that support a broad selection of signal processing related activities defined by the scope of the Society. Technical Committees and SIGs are actively involved in awards, conferences, publications, and educational activities, and provide technical advice to the Society’s leadership.

The Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (IVMSP TC) promotes and guides the advancement of the field of image, video, and multidimensional signal processing. It provides leadership for the technical programs for ICIP and for the IVMSP-related areas at ICASSP; recruits and volunteers reviewers for ICIP and for the IVMSP-related areas at ICASSP; assists in proposing and organizing ICIP; organizes and operates IVMSP workshops and sessions at ICIP and ICASSP; and participates in a range of other SPS activities.

The Signal Processing Theory and Methods (SPTM) TC reports on the 2015 Signal Processing/Signal Processing Education Workshop and new TC members

The Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems Technical Committee (DISPS TC) has the mission to promote and support activities of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in the areas of: i) design, development and implementation of signal processing systems; ii) design of algorithms with implementation in mind and iii) design of software tools and methodologies to support the design of signal processing systems.

The latest IEEE Biometrics Council (BMC) newsletter reports a welcome message from Venu Govindaraju, the new president of the IEEE BMC, latest datasets for fingerprint algorithm evaluation and a large biometrics-based human identification initiative in India.

With the explosive growth of 5G wireless technology development, signal processing techniques are playing more and more important roles in many aspects. As an industry-oriented technical committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Industry DSP Technology Standing Committee (IDSP-SC) is actively promoting 5G technology from a practice and industry perspective.
