The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

For our March 2015 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of Deep Lerning techniques. The section below covers patents granted recently for natural language processing, research of neural networks, correlation analysis between data streams, document analysis and medical image enhancement.

The AASP TC reports on elections, the latest IEEE SPM special issue on assisted listening, upcoming challenges and conferences.

Gopalan, Prem K (Princeton University) “Scalable inference of discrete data: User behavior, networks and genetic variation” (2015) Advisor: Blei, David M.

The IEEE MGA vTools team is happy to announce successful new releases for the following vTools applications:

All Section officers and Chapter/Affinity Group chairs have been contacted with a reminder that the following annual reports are required to be eligible for a rebate:

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is happy to announce the addition of fifteen new Chapters formed in 2019. We welcome the new SPS Chapters and wish them great success in their future activities and events.

Karl Nieman (The University of Texas at Austin) "Space-Time-Frequency Methods for Interference-Limited Communication Systems", (2014), Advisor: Brian Evans

On February 8, the Board of Directors of the IEEE voted to approve a set of amendments to the organization’s patent policy. Previously, the IEEE Standards Association (“IEEE-SA”) has established new rules that must be followed in all IEEE standards development activities.

In this series, we introduce a scientist, who uses signal processing techniques for his research findings, by means of an interview. This month, we are happy to introduce Dr. Jorge Arroyo Palacios, a postdoctoral scholar at Department of Physiological Nursing, University of California, San Francisco, whose research mainly focuses on physiological signal processing.

The PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2015 is now open! This year's challenge is 'Reducing False Arrhythmia Alarms in the ICU'. False alarms in the ICU can lead to a disruption of care, impacting both the patient and the clinical staff through noise disturbances, desensitization to warnings and slowing of response times, leading to decreased quality of care. False alarm rates can be as high as 90% or more. To address this issue we have developed an expert-labelled data set of 1250 life-threatening arrhythmia alarms with five minutes of electrophysiological and pulsatile waveform data leading up to each alarm event. Competitors are challenged to devise a method of processing all the available data to reduce false alarms with minimal or no effect on true (vital) alarms.

The conference formerly known as the “Digital Signal Processing Workshop” (DSP Workshop) is now known as the “Signal Processing Workshop”.  This name evolution is a reflection of the ever-expanding reach of signal processing --- to processing on graphs, or xampled processing of continuous time signals, or plenoptic sensors, or financial analysis, to name a few.  The conference continues to partner with the SPS Education Committee, and is a premier outlet for signal processing education.  The

The IEEE MGA vTools team is happy to announce successful new releases for the following vTools applications:

Know a classmate or student who may benefit from a Student membership to the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS)? We are pleased to announce that SPS is offering FREE Student membership to IEEE Student and Graduate Student members for the 2015 membership year!

Register now for the IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (2015 WIE-ILC), to be held 23-25 April 2015, in San Jose, CA, USA. With a theme of "Lead Beyond: Accelerating Innovative Women Who Change the World," the conference focuses on leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Overview The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $40,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2015 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter. Allocation of funds will be competitive.

Now IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form at the related TC section pages.

Several elections took place in the Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) technical committee (TC). We congratulate Peter Willett and Martin Haardt for their election and assignment as new SAM TC Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively. We especially thank our past SAM TC Chair Dominic K.C. Ho who was chairing the SAM TC in the past two years for his excellent leadership and dedication.

Deep learning is becoming an important AI paradigm for pattern recognition, image/video processing and fraud detection applications in finance. The computational complexity of a deep learning network dictates need for a distributed realization. The big data lab at Impetus, led by Dr. Vijay Srinivas Agneeswaran, has built the first prototype of the distributed deep learning network over Apache Spark. They have parallelized the training phase of the network and consequently reduced training time.
