The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

As a special benefit to IEEE members for the month of February, IEEE-USA will offer "Work-Life Balance: Book 1," by Peggy G. Hutcheson. Hutcheson writes that “Work-life balance is a state of control, achievement and satisfaction in your life. It means that you have a sense of being able to make choices that fit for you, given your current situation and your goals.

Please be aware that recent changes implemented by the Chinese government regarding access to social media services, cloud-hosted infrastructure, and API services may have an impact on your IEEE Web site.

Any features and functionalities on your IEEE site that make use of these types of services provided by companies such as, but not limited to, Google and Facebook, may be inaccessible by the public in China, including IEEE members and volunteers.

IEEE-USA has launched a new flagship publication, IEEE-USA InSight. IEEE-USA InSight represents the merger of IEEE-USA’s two award-winning publications: Today’s Engineer and IEEE-USA in ACTION.

Now IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form at the related TC section pages.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 169 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest.

There has been an explosion of research in network systems of various types, including physical, engineered, biological and social systems. Its aim is to find answers to fundamental questions about the systems and with them be able to understand, predict, and control them better. To that end, a core area of work is signal and information processing over networks.

In this series, we aim to introduce senior society members and other experts of the signal processing field. This month, we are happy to introduce Prof. Sergios Theodoridis, Professor of Signal Processing and Machine Learning in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the University of Athens.

For our April 2015 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of wavelet analysis. The section below covers patents granted recently for seismic data analysis, image stream compression, audio identification, continuous wavelet estimation, multidimensional data analysis, motion tracking, dispersion measurement, time domain network analysis, and video fingerprinting.

Computer scientists at Washington University in St. Louis’ School of Engineering & Applied Science analyzed a huge amount of data regarding an important protein and discovered its connection in human history as well as clues about its role in complex neurological diseases.

With the explosive growth of 5G wireless technology development, signal processing techniques are playing more and more important roles in many aspects. As an industry-oriented technical committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, Industry DSP Technology Standing Committee (IDSP-SC) is actively promoting 5G technology from a practice and industry perspective.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society invites nominations for the 2016 Class of SPS Distinguished Lecturers (DLs). Per the Board of Governors’ motion, this year the Society will also appoint a special Distinguished Lecturer in the area of Machine Learning/Data Science for a two-year term. The special Distinguished Lecturer will be available for a period of four years, so we will appoint a sixth Distinguished Lecturer in 2015 and in 2017, explicitly in the area of Machine Learning/Data Science.
