Welcome to the Fall 2020 Edition of the Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee Newsletter.
We open this edition with what is likely a final letter from the SLTC Chair, Eric Fosler-Lussier, before he hands the reins to Dong Yu and transitions to his role as “past chair” for 2021. Eric has done a tremendous amount during his tenure as chair to position our technical committee to more effectively serve our community. From me, and for us, thank you!
As we are all putting finishing touches on ICASSP 2021 submissions (due October 21), consider volunteering or nominating someone to review. Good reviewers make good conferences! More detailed information available here, or jump straight to the nomination form.
A big congratulations to Karen Livescu who was elected to be an IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturer! These talks will be mostly remote this year, hopefully making scheduling easier. Dr. Livescu is a *great* speaker. A description of the Distinguished Lecturer program, including details about how to schedule a Distinguished Lecture can be found here.
Finally, SLTC Nominations are open for the 2021-2023 term NOW. The nomination window will close on October 20, with election results posted on November 9. A full call for nominations can be found here with the nomination form here.
This newsletter is an ideal forum for updates, reports, announcements and editorials which don't fit well with traditional journals. We welcome your contributions, as well as calls for papers, job announcements, comments and suggestions. You can submit job postings here, and contact the TC via this form, or send mail to speechnewseds@listserv.ieee.org to propose articles. To subscribe to the Newsletter, send an email with the command "subscribe speechnewsdist" in the message body to listserv@listserv.ieee.org.
If you want to stay connected to the IEEE SLTC between newsletters, we are on twitter @IEEE_SLTC.
This is a short newsletter, so until we talk again in December,
Stay safe and do good.
Andrew Rosenberg, Editor
Heidi Christensen, Communications Vice-Chair
