The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is pleased to announce upcoming events, leadership summits, and opportunities:

The IEEE Maker Project competition has launched and will run through 17 September 2016. This year, Thomas Coughlin, IEEE Senior member and Chair of the IEEE Public Visibility Committee, will serve as the host of this competition and will be featured in an ongoing video series that will highlight cool projects and events on the contest website.

Recharge your resume and gain in-demand skills this summer at IEEEx.org, IEEE’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) portal on the edX platform. Learn why smart grids are key to modernizing the current electrical system to optimize the conservation and delivery of power with the new free course, “Smart Grids: Electricity for the Future,” starting on 29 June.

At its 18 June 2016 meeting, the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board approved changing the geographic unit close/end date for prior year financial reporting to the last day of February.

This change applies only to the financial reporting deadline. The geographic unit officer reporting and meeting reporting deadlines remain as 15 March, and the bonus deadline remains as the third Friday of February. The rebate algorithm and calculation remain unchanged.

MGA is launching its series of events focused on providing career assistance, professional networking, and education on in-demand and emerging technologies for practicing engineers and technical professionals. Registration is now open for two upcoming IEEE Smart Tech Signature Events. Virtual participation is also available with the new live streaming registration option.

30 September - 1 October 2016, in Crystal City, VA, USA. Workshop topics include:

Jose’ M. F. Moura, SPS Awards Board Chair

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) / Fraunhofer IIS

The Faculty of Engineering and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft invite applications for a

at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Communication Engineering and International Audio Laboratories Erlangen to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of three years. Depending on successful evaluation the appointment will be extended for another three years.

The IEEE Board of Directors has approved the 2017 IEEE Technical Field Awards including the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award, the IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing, the IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award in Instrumentation and Measurement, the IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award and IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits.

Between 15 August and 3 October 2016, IEEE members will have the opportunity to vote on a fundamental change in the IEEE Constitution. It is very easy to ignore ballot initiatives, especially when there are not familiar names on the ballot. In this case, there is a very important element on the ballot, which you are urged to evaluate and vote upon.

Your vote is important! On 15 August 2016, the election of Regional Directors-at-Large for Regions 1-6 and Region 8 (term 1 January 2017 through 31 December 2018) and Members-at-Large (term 1 January 2017 through 31 December 2019) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors will open.

The Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee features job announcements, conference calls, call for papers and upcoming challenges.

Please visit the Conferences and Events page on the IEEE Signal Processing Society website for upcoming Lectures by Distinguished Lecturers.

IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form related to a particular TC field.

To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and selecting a particular TC.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 22 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest.

Please refer to the following webpage for the latest updates on upcoming conferences in Signal Processing.

Listing of all conferences

Alturkostani, Hani Eftikhar (University of Idaho), “Mitigation Strategies for Safety Applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks Subjected to Jamming” (2016) Advisor: Krings, Axel

Worm, AnthonyView Profile (State University of New York at Binghamton), “Prioritized Grammar Enumeration: A novel method for symbolic regression” (2016) Advisor: Chiu, Kenneth

For our August 2016 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of pedestrian detection using various signal processing approaches. The topic represents a central issue in up-to-date research on self driving vehicles, surveillance and city monitoring.
