128 Signal Processing Society Members Elevated to Senior Member

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) is honored to announce the elevation of 128 of its members to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. These members have demonstrated outstanding professional performance, exhibited professional maturity through long-term experience, and established themselves as leaders in their respective IEEE-designated fields of interest. Senior Member is the only membership grade that is eligible to be nominated for IEEE Fellow. The new Senior Members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society are:

In this series, we introduce a member of our Society by means of an interview. This month, we are happy to introduce Le An from University of California, Riverside, who recently finished his PhD thesis, "Real-World Person Identification”.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society Malaysia Chapter has been selected as the fourth recipient of the 2014 Chapter of the Year Award!

In an effort to increase signal processing awareness among the general public, the IEEE Signal Processing Society has created a video to answer, in layman’s terms, the simple question: What is signal processing? Check out the video below to see the many ways in which signal processing technologies surround us in our everyday lives, allowing us to interact with ourselves, one another, and the world. Learn how communications and entertainment, security and healthcare, are all made easier, safer, accessible, and possible because of signal processing technologies. Watch the video and share!

In this series we aim to introduce society members and other experts of the signal processing field by means of interviews. This month, we are happy to present the Dr. Ercan E. Kuruoglu, Senior Researcher from ISTI-CNR Pisa, Italy.

IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership of the IEEE. It honors members with an outstanding record of technical achievements, contributing importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, and bringing significant value to society. Around this time (end of November), the new class of IEEE Fellows is announced. Hopefully, the list contains many names familiar to you. If not, then perhaps it is a good idea to nominate someone yourself!

The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) appointed several new Chairs for committees that report to the Membership Board. The appointments are as follows:

In this series we introduce a member of our Society by means of an interview. This month, we are happy to introduce Neil Wachowski from Colorade State University, who recently finished his PhD thesis, "Characterization of Multiple Time-Varying Transient Sources from Multivariate Data Sequences.”

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2015 and will serve until 31 December 2017. Nine candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions. The successful candidates represent a broad spectrum of the Signal Processing Society. The Board of Governors will confirm the election results at their December Board meeting.

The e-Membership program started as a pilot in 2011. The intent of the pilot was to test the impact of substantially reduced dues on membership recruitment and retention in countries where the per capita gross domestic product is US$15,000 or less. Data has shown that there was no significant increase on recruitment or retention during this period.
