The Design and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems (DISPS) Technology Committee promotes and supports activities of the SPS in several areas including: (a) design, development and implementation of signal processing systems; (b) design of algorithms with implementation in mind; and (c) design of software tools and methodologies to support the design of signal processing systems.

Currently, DISPS TC has 29 members, as listed in the TC web page.  There are new openings for three members to join the TC in 2010 and the new member election is under way.

Recently, DISPS TC members Yen-Kuang Chen, Chaitali Chakrabarti, Shuvra Bhattacharyya, and Bruno Bougard organized the first special issue devoted to the important emerging topic of multicore design and implementation of signal processing systems in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The special issue, entitled “Signal Processing on Platform with Multiple Cores,” received so many high quality submissions that the issue was divided to two parts: the first part “Overview and Methodologies” containing 11 articles was published in November issue and the second part “Applications and Design” with 10 articles will be published later.

The DISPS TC sponsors the Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS), which was held this year at Tampere, Finland on 7-9 October 2009. During the three days, 55 papers were presented including papers from two special sessions: “DSP on Graphics Processing Units” and “DSP on Global Navigation Satellite Systems”. Keynotes were provided by Henry Tirri, Nokia Research Center; Chong-Min Kyung, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology; Steve Wilton, University of British Columbia; and Edward A. Lee, University of California, Berkeley. For SiPS, the best student paper is awarded with the Bob Owens Memorial Paper Award and this year the winner was the paper entitled “Software Designs of Image Processing Tasks with Incremental Refinement of Computation” by Davide Anastasia and Yiannis Andreopoulos, University College London, UK. Photos from SiPS 2009 can be found on the web page.

SiPS 2010 is to be held in the San Francisco Bay Area on 6-8 October 2010, with the special theme of “Bio-medical Signal Processing Systems”. The submission instructions can be found on the SiPS 2010 web page.

The DISPS TC coordinates the review for the Implementation of Signal Processing Systems track of the annual SPS flagship conference — International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP). The next ICASSP in Dallas, TX, on 14-19 March 2010, will have two lecture sessions and two poster sessions related to the DISPS track.
