Speaker recognition is a computing task to establish or to verify the speaker’s identity using the speaker’s voice. Spoken language recognition is a task to identify or to confirm the language, dialect or accent that is spoken given a speech sample.

Speaker and language recognition are typical pattern recognition tasks that aim to classify speech signals based on a priori knowledge and statistical information extracted from the patterns.

In year 2010, IEEE Signal Processing Malaysia Chapter has organized various activities ranging from membership drive, workshops, technical talks, technical visit, competition, conference technical co-sponsorships, social activities as well as administrative meetings.

As the Associate Editor for the SPS eNewsletter in charge of liaising with the different Technical Committees of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, I gathered below frequently recurring questions together with the best answers I could come up with so far.

Each year, the IEEE Board of Directors confers the grade of Fellow on up to one-tenth percent of the members. To qualify for consideration, an individual must have been a Member, normally for five years or more, and a Senior Member at the time for nomination to Fellow. The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in IEEE’s designated fields. This year 49 SPS members were recognized with the grade of Fellow by the IEEE Signal Processing Society as of 1 January 2011.

By most standards, cloud computing is still in the early stages of adoption by midsize and larger organizations, but the pace is increasing as users look for additional cost savings and technology perks, such as scalability.

The Steering Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) recently distributed a call for proposals to host ICME 2013 and ICME 2014, to be held in summer of both years. IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) has been the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies since 2000.
