The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

IEEE is pleased to offer a new electronic membership (e-Membership) option for the 2011 membership year.

As the first step, embracing IEEE’s global strategy, SPM has decided to experiment with a translated reprint edition of SPM. The first edition in simplified Chinese was completed and the printed version was distributed to ICIP attendees in Hong Kong.

The IEEE Concentration Banking Program offers all Geographic Units, Conferences, and Standards Developing Committees a bank account with unlimited check writing privileges, paying a higher rate of interest than traditional business checking accounts.

IEEE has announced a new subscription option available only to IEEE members.

IEEE Member Digital Library Basic provides IEEE members with three new full-text article downloads every month, plus the ability to rollover unused downloads for 12 months, for only US$15 per month.

IEEE's International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME 2011) will be hosted in Barcelona, Spain from July 11 – 15, 2011.

Post-doc and PhD research assistantship positions in the areas of digital signal processing and speech processing are available in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Potential candidates should have a solid background in signal processing, preferably in the speech processing area.

Did you know? IEEE SPS provides travel support for local chapters to invite SPS Distinguished Lecturers.  See a list of SPS 2010 and 2011 Distinguished Lecturers, and bookmark this link for upcoming SPS Distinguished Lectures near you.

The nomination period for IEEE Fellow is presently open and will continue through 1 March 2011 for the Class of 2012.

Professor Al Bovik's research interests broadly span the areas of digital video, image processing, and computational aspects of biological visual perception. In the September issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, Dr. Bovik published a 7 page-long article, not on his exciting research, but on how to optimize the educational experience of students learning the subject of video processing.

Face-to-face communication is a highly interactive process where participants mutually exchange and interpret verbal and nonverbal messages.

Communication dynamics represent the temporal relationship between these communicative messages. Even when only one person speaks at a time, other participants exchange information continuously among themselves and with the speaker through gesture, gaze, posture, and facial expressions.

Video-based human action detection has recently been demonstrated to be very useful in a wide range of applications including video surveillance, telemonitoring of patients and senior people, medical diagnosis and training, video content analysis and search, and intelligent human computer interaction.

As video camera sensors become less expensive, this approach is increasingly attractive since it is low cost and can be adapted to different video scenarios.

The purpose of the Designa and Implementation of Signal Processing Systems Technical Committee (DISPS TC) is to promote and support activities of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in the areas of: Design, development and implementation of signal processing systems; Design of algorithms with implementation in mind; Design of software tools and methodologies to support the design of signal processing systems.
