10 years of news and resources for members of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
At its 30 September 2010 meeting, the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society passed an amendment to the Society’s Field of Interest,
which is a part of the Society’s Constitution document. Procedures require approval by the IEEE Technical Activities Board, which has already been secured, followed by a 30-day period for member comment. The amendment is considered approved unless one-half percent or more of the Society’s membership objects, in writing, within 30 days of publication. Publication here fulfills the latter portion of the approval requirement. Please provide comments via e-mail to <sp.info AT ieee.org> or via fax to 908-235-1627.
The amendment is as follows:
Constitution Article II - Field of Interest and Vision Statement
Old Field of Interest:
The theory and application of filtering, coding, transmitting, estimating, detecting, analyzing, recognizing, synthesizing, recording, and reproducing signals by digital or analog devices or techniques. The term “signal” includes audio, video, speech, image, communication, geophysical, sonar, radar, medical, musical, and other signals.
New Field of Interest:
Signal processing is the enabling technology for the generation, transformation, extraction, and interpretation of information. It comprises the theory, algorithms with associated architectures and implementations, and applications related to processing information contained in many different formats broadly designated as signals. Signal processing uses mathematical, statistical, computational, heuristic, and/or linguistic representations, formalisms, modeling techniques and algorithms for generating, transforming, transmitting, and learning from signals.
