The US National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) is pleased to announce the launch of the PerfLoc Prize Competition on March 22, 2017. This competition is about developing the best possible indoor localization and tracking app for Android smartphones. The competition participants are required to use the extensive Android smartphone data repository developed by NIST to develop their apps and have their apps’ performance evaluated through the PerfLoc Performance Evaluation Portal. The website for the PerfLoc Prize Competition is at
The website contains all the rules for participating in PerfLoc, the timeline for the Competition, and much more. The Competition will have up to three winners winning cash prizes of $20,000, $10,000, and $5,000.
There are some restrictions on who is eligible to receive a cash prize as described in the “PerfLoc Competition Rules” on the above website, but NIST encourages all researchers across the world with expertise in indoor localization and tracking and smartphone app development to participate in the Competition. It is the prestige and honor of developing the best app that is the real prize.
The timeline for the Competition is indeed tight. We encourage prospective participants to start as early as they can to have a chance of developing the best possible app.
There shall be a live demonstration of the finalist apps at the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, in August 2017 and a subsequent demonstration of some of the winning apps at the 2017 Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) Conference in Sapporo, Japan, in September 2017.
If you have any general questions about PerfLoc, please write to Nader Moayeri, moayeri@nist.gov. Any specific, technical questions should be sent to LocSprt@nist.gov
