IVMSP-TC Activity Update

By:
Nikolaos Boulgouris

Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (IVMSP TC) promotes and guides the advancement of the field of image, video, and multidimensional signal processing. It provides leadership for the technical programs for ICIP and for the IVMSP-related areas at ICASSP; recruits and volunteers reviewers for ICIP and for the IVMSP-related areas at ICASSP; assists in proposing and organizing ICIP; organizes and operates IVMSP workshops and sessions at ICIP and ICASSP; and participates in a range of other SPS activities.

During the past year, IVMSP TC has continued its key role in overseeing the organization, reviewing process and the technical program of the ICIP and ICASSP conferences, and provided core reviewing by volunteer TC members. ICIP 2017 was held in Beijing, China, from September 17th to 20th, and featured 7 special sessions from diverse areas in image processing and its applications, 3 keynote lectures given by prominent speakers, as well as 7 tutorials. Over 2,000 papers were submitted to ICIP 2017, and 915 high-quality papers were accepted for presentation at the conference, which was attended by over 1,300 attendees. The excellent technical programme was complemented by industry workshops, panels, and other events. This year’s ICASSP will take place in Calgary, Canada, while ICIP will take place in Athens, Greece.

The 2018 IEEE Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing workshop will take place in Zagori, Greece, in June 2018. The main themes of the workshop will be Big Data, Social Media, and Computational Imaging. A number of keynote talks have been confirmed.

In January 2018, the TC has welcomed eight new members. Newly elected members for a three-year term (2018-2020) are, in alphabetical order: Jenny Benois-Pineau (University of Bordeaux), Marco Cagnazzo (Telecom-ParisTech), Ioannis Kompatsiaris (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas), Chaker Larabi (University of Poitiers), Aleksandra Pizurica (Ghent University), Yap-Peng Tan (Nanyang Technological University), Giuseppe Valenzise (CNRS), and Dong Xu (University of Sydney). Congratulations to the new members!

The TC is also delighted to announce that, as of January 2018, four researchers with strong links with the committee have been elevated to the IEEE Fellow grade.

Pascal Frossard, former chair of the TC, from École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, has been recognized for his contributions to adaptive image and video representation, coding and communication.

Chia-Wen Lin, from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, who recently completed two terms of service as TC member, has been recognised for his contributions to multimedia coding and editing.

Stefan Winkler, TC member from the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in Singapore, has been recognised for his contributions to perceptual video quality measurement.

Dong Xu, TC member from the University of Sydney, Australia, has been recognised for his contributions to recognition and retrieval of multimedia and biometric data.

Congratulations!

IVMSP TC welcomes participation from all members of the SPS technical community interested in the TC areas. Affiliate membership within the TC is open to all, and you are encouraged to sign up. For additional information, please visit the TC website.
