The 2009 Annual Reporting and Rebate cycle process is now underway. All Section Officers and Chapter/Affinity Group Chairs have been contacted with a reminder that the following annual reports are required to be eligible for a rebate:
The IEEE Division IX Division-Director Nominating Committee invites nominations for the position of Division IX Director. Division Directors are elected to the IEEE Board by members of Societies they represent. They first serve as Directors-elect before becoming Directors and Members of the IEEE Board. Division Directors represent the membership of his/her Division in the IEEE Assembly as a voting delegate.
In accordance with the Bylaws of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the membership will elect, by direct ballot, THREE Members-at-Large to the Board of Governors (BoG) for three-year terms commencing 1 January 2011 and ending 31 December 2013, as well as ONE Regional Director-at-Large each for the corresponding regions: Regions 1-6 (US), Regions 7 and 9 (Canada and Latin America), Region 8 (Europe/Middle East/Africa) and Region 10 (Asia/Pacific Rim) for two-year terms commencing 1 January 20
The IEEE Signal Processing Society congratulates the following 38 SPS members who were recognized with the grade of Fellow as of 1 January 2010:
Four SPS members have been selected to receive prestigious IEEE Medals in 2010. They are: Ray Dolby (Dolby Laboratories, Inc., San Francisco, CA) for the IEEE Edison Medal; John M. Cioffi (Stanford University, Stanford, CA) for the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal; Ronald Schafer (Hewlett Packard, Palo Alto, CA) for the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal; and Alfonso Farina (SELEX-Sistemi Integrati, Rome, Italy) for the IEEE Dennis J. Picard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications.
Applications are invited from outstanding undergraduate students not yet in their final year of studies to undertake 10-week research projects in Autonomous Robotics at National University of Ireland - Maynooth, Ireland.
The Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee (MMSP TC) successfully organized the 2009 MMSP Workshop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marking a milestone for the first time one of the major IEEE Signal Processing Society events being held in Latin America. Planning is underway for MMSP 2010, which will be held in Saint-Malo, France. The TC also invites proposals to organize the 2011 MMSP Workshop. Another major effort in 2009 that the MMSP TC is actively engaged in was to revitalize the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) jointly organized by four IEEE societies. The TC welcomes a new Chair and eight newly elected members in January 2010.
Recently DISPS TC members organized the first special issue devoted to the important emerging topic of multicore design and implementation of signal processing systems on IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The TC sponsors Workshop on Signal Processing Systems (SiPS) -- the 2009 edition was successfully held in Tampere, Finland, and the 2010 edition is calling for papers and participation.
IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing seeks applicants for the position of Editor-in-Chief serving a three-year term. The Steering Committee of the Transactions invites applications, which should be sent to Tom LaPorta <tlp AT cse.psu.edu> by 1 March 2010.
In September 2009, USA Today and other media outlets have reported a successful servicing mission to the Hubble Space telescope. The In-the-Spotlight column in the January 2010 issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine provided a closer look at the imaging sensors and the associated processing and control mechanisms in the Hubble and its successor.
IEEE SPS provides travel support for local chapters to invite SPS Distinguished Lecturers. And if you are interested in organizing a new SPS chapter, or participating in activities in a SPS local chapter near you, please check out Local Chapter Resources.
In recent years, there has been a significant motivation to develop software techniques for the noninvasive diagnosis of abnormal functioning of the vocal apparatus by studying the patients' voice signal. Learn about noninvasive pathology approaches for the prediction of healthy and affected voice signals from a recent Lecture Notes in the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.
An exclusive article by Alex Acero, the SPS's first Vice President-Technical Directions, on many society-wide initiatives on technical directions in recent years. These include the formation of the Technical Directions Board, review of Technical Committees, the creation of new TCs and TC-sponsored workshops, and the renaming of several TCs to better reflect their latest scope and interests.
The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) announced the 2010 Class of Distinguished Lecturers. Five colleagues were honored and they are: Sheila Hemami (Cornell University, NY); Shrikanth Narayanan (University of Southern California, CA); Antonio Oretga (University of Southern California, CA); Venu Veeravalli (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Il); and Abdelhak Zoubir (Darmstadt University of Techno
The IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) invites nominations for the Vice President- Awards & Membership Officer position for the term 1 January 2011 through 31 December 2013.
