Special Issue on "Multimedia Big Data for Extreme Events"

Recently, leveraging technological advances and using Big Data approaches for information management and processing in extreme events (e.g., Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather, Emergency Events, Diseases and etc.) have attracted much research attention. Multimedia is increasingly becoming the most important and valuable source for insights and information in extreme events. It covers from everyone’s experiences to everything happening in the world. There will be lots of multimedia big data in extreme events --- surveillance video, disaster images, social media, voice and video, to name a few, only if their volumes grow to the extent that the traditional multimedia processing and analysis systems may not handle effectively. As such, multimedia big data in extreme events is spurring on tremendous amounts of research and development of related technologies and applications. The goal of this special issue is to provide a premier forum for researchers working on multimedia big data for extreme events to present their recent research results. It also provides an important opportunity for multidisciplinary studies connecting multimedia computing to disaster information management. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Integration of heterogeneous extreme events data sources
  • Extreme events prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery using multimedia big data
  • Multimedia big data in international cooperation/responses to extreme events
  • Risk reduction and governance in extreme events using multimedia big data
  • Multimedia big data in interagency network for emergency recovery
  • Multimedia big data in environmental emergency
  • Pre-incident training and testing using multimedia big data
  • Multimedia Big data in communicating and incident assessment
  • Use of social media in emergencies
  • Filtering of noise and misinformation in open source extreme events data
  • Security and privacy in multimedia big data for extreme events
  • Interaction, access, visualization of multimedia big data for extreme events
  • Multimedia Big data in disaster tourism
  • Multimedia Big data in extreme events management during multi-hazards

Submission Procedure:

Papers should be formatted according to the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia guidelines for authors. All the submitted papers will go through the same review process as that for the regular TMM paper submissions. Referees will consider originality, significance, technical soundness, clarity of exposition, and relevance to the special issue topics above.

Important Dates:

  • Manuscript Due: 1 February 2018
  • First Notification: 1 May 2018
  • Revised Manuscript: 1 July 2018
  • Notification of Acceptance: 1 August 2018
  • Camera Ready Paper Due: 15 August 2018
  • Publication Date: October 2018
