The Fellow Reference Committee is seeking nominations for three new members of the 2018 Fellow Reference Committee. The term of appointment is three years, non-renewable (1 January 2018-31 December 2020).
Earlier this year, IEEE Signal Processing Society President Rabab Ward attended the 2017 IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference. The annual event, held every May in San Jose, California, USA, drew over 1,500 attendees from around the world for networking events, professional development activities, technical sessions, and more. Dr. Ward recalls her experience below:
The IEEE Signal Processing Society is excited to announce the newest project from the Women in Signal Processing (WISP) Committee - the Women in Signal Processing Directory!
Overview
The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $20,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2017 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive.
The Signal Processing Society, in partnership with TELUS, recently sponsored an inspiring video about a small startup team of Canadian signal processing and computer engineers who, in 1978, competed with NASA in a race to use radar to image never-before-seen parts of the earth. The video is currently airing on Air Canada flights as part of their in-flight entertainment package, and is part of an ongoing effort to increase public visibility of signal processing and the Society.
IEEE SPS has built a streamlined mechanism for employers to add a job announcement by simply filling in a simple job opportunity submission Web form related to a particular TC field. To submit job announcements for a particular Technical Committee, the submission form can be found by visiting the page below and selecting a particular TC. Visit the SPS Job Submission Form.

For our August 2017 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of wavelet analysis
Video distribution services have been growing exponentially in the past decade. Cisco Visual Network Index Report predicts that globally, IP video traffic will be 82 percent of all consumer Internet traffic by 2020, up from 70 percent in 2015. This issue features the next installment of our regular column, "Getting to Know Your Fellow Researchers", highlighting Douglas O'Shaughnessy, who is a Professor at INRS-Télécommunications (University of Quebec) in Montreal, Canada and the author of the textbook Speech Communications:
This is a massive open online course offered by the University of California, San Diego. The course is thought by Ilkay Altintas and Amarnath Gupta, and it is developed for those new to data science.
"Digital Signal Processing with Kernel Methods" is a new book written by Jose Luis Rojo-Avarez, Manel Martinez-Ramon, Jordi Munoz-Mari, and Gustau Camps-Valls.
Claude Shannon has changed electrical engineering, and he was one of the greatest influencers on the field of signal processing. In recent years, there are more stories about his remarkable life.

In today’s world, the environment is unavoidably prone to the unexpected occurrence of unpredictable events. Whatever the kinds of unexpected occurrences are, be they threats to safety or security breach, in the final analysis they are all known to be uncertainties, which in turn, bring us to think in terms of risk.
The IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (SPM) welcomes members' input to the new column, “Community Voices.” This column provides a vehicle to collect reflections from diverse members of the signal processing community on questions that are of interest to many.
