The Latest News, Articles, and Events in Signal Processing

We would like to highlight the second edition of "Time-Frequency Signal Analysis and Processing: A Comprehensive Reference" (https://www.elsevier.com/books/time-frequency-signal-analysis-and-processing/boashash/978-0-12-398499-9) by Professor Boualem Boashash.

Alterations in brain development during infancy may precede the behavioral manifestation of developmental disorders. Infants at increased risk for autism are also at increased risk for other developmental disorders, including, quite commonly, language disorders.

Machine learning and new signal/image processing techniques are changing our lives at a rapid pace. However, would you think that your vending machine may actually have facial recognition algorithms to offer you a drink? That's new and interesting, but not so distant future.

Google recently announced a new labeled dataset of human actions taking place in videos, named Atomic Visual Actions (AVA). It densely annotates 80 atomic visual actions in 57.6k movie clips with actions localized in space and time, resulting in 210k action labels with multiple labels per human occurring frequently. Compared with existing datasets, AVA possesses the following main characteristics:

We invite symposium proposals for the sixth IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP) which will be held in Anaheim, CA, on November 26-28, 2019. GlobalSIP is a conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society conference that focuses on signal and information processing with an emphasis on up-and-coming signal processing themes.

For our November 2017 issue, we cover recent patents granted in the area of image and audio inpainting

Overview
The Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) has allocated $20,000 for Member-Driven Initiatives for the 2017 calendar year. The funding is open to all Signal Processing Society members, Chapters and Committees. However, all proposals must include the involvement of the local Chapter to encourage geographic development. Allocation of funds will be competitive.

Webinar Details: November 28, 2017 from 11 pm to 12 am (EST) or November 29, 2017 from 11 am to 12 pm (JST)

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is very excited to offer the next webinar in our new series featuring “technical and technological innovations and their applications in signal processing” from top researchers and thought leaders in academia and industry.

Three new Members-at-Large will take their seats on the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors beginning 1 January 2018 and will serve until 31 December 2020. Nine candidates competed for the three Member-at-Large positions.

A 4-year PhD position is available within a collaborative project between ESAT-STADIUS, Dept. Electrical Engineering and ExpORL, Dept. Neurosciences, KU Leuven, Belgium. The goal is to develop a neuro-steered hearing aid that will adapt its function according to brain responses measured using EEG.

Tulane University

Several post-doctoral fellow or PhD graduate research assistant positions are available immediately to work on the development of machine learning, image processing, statistical and signal processing approaches for the analysis and integration of genomic and medical imaging data.  More information about our research work at Multiscale Bioimaging and Bioinformatics Laboratory of Tulane Biomedical Engineering Department can be found at our website (

Aalborg University

Manual operation of hearing assistive devices is cumbersome in various situations. With advances in machine learning and speech technology, voice interfaces due to their convenience will be widely deployed for hearing assistive devices and they can be personalized and offer richer functionalities.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) / Fraunhofer IIS

International Audio Laboratories Erlangen is jointly operated by the Faculty of Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Institute for Integrated Circuits at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. It conducts both fundamental and applied research on novel audio technology. This involves a close and long-term collaboration between both institutions stipulated by contract. Eventually, more than 50 scientists will work in this internationally unique research facility.

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories

The internship program at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) gives students excellent opportunities to work in an industrial research lab environment side-by-side with world-class researchers. This program emphasizes close collaboration with a particular researcher or members of a small team. MERL considers graduate students from all over the world. As many of our projects benefit from specialized knowledge in a given field, graduate students pursuing a Ph.D.
